Petrochemical feedstock PTA standard enters international system

Recently, the first commercial PTA ASTM standards developed by Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute were published on the website of the American Materials Testing Association, marking the official entry of PTA, a petrochemical bulk raw materials standard, into international standards. system.

There are four PTA standards released this time. The standards are mainly applicable to the determination of the content of p-carboxybenzaldehyde and p-toluic acid in two key impurities in terephthalic acid. These impurities are used in the downstream polyester process. Stable operation and quality of polyester products have important influences. The promulgation and implementation of the PTA ASTM standard will help eliminate technical barriers to PTA products, promote the development of global PTA trade, and at the same time fill the gap of PTA international standards.

As an important petrochemical basic organic raw material, PTA is mainly used to produce polyester and other products, and its global production and trade volume is huge. In 2012, global PTA production capacity exceeded 50 million tons, and China's PTA production capacity exceeded 30 million tons. For a long time, the absence of PTA international standards has caused inconvenience to PTA production and global trade. In order to support the healthy development of China's PTA industry, Sinopec has given full play to its technical advantages in terms of PTA production and standards, actively explored effective ways to formulate PTA international standards, and chose to cooperate with the U.S. Material Testing Association, which has a relatively high authority. Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute is the main drafting unit for the PTA ASTM standard.
